Research Interests:
My laboratory concentrates on how gonadal hormones interact to modify brain neurochemistry and behavior. Specifically we concentrate on the interaction of ovarian hormones (estrogen, progesterone) on how these affect neuropeptides systems in the hippocampus. We currently have an interest in opioid peptides such as enkephalin and dynorphin as well as corticotropin releasing factor and how changes on these peptide systems correlate with anxiety and depressive behaviors. My laboratory also holds two active collaborations: In collaboration with Dr. Caroline Appleyard from Ponce School of Medicine we are assessing the role of the HPA axis, specifically changes in central corticotropin releasing factor in an animal model of endometriosis. In collaboration with Dr. Edwin Santini and Dr. Dinah Ramos we are interested in the role of chronic morphine on how it affects associative learning at different stages of the rats estrous cycle in comparison to males.
