Biosketch:
Dr. Jorge Varela received the following degrees from the University of Florida: B.S. (Chemistry) College of Liberal Arts and Science, B.S.A. (Microbiology and Cell Science) College of Agriculture, and Pharm. D. (Institutional Track) College of Pharmacy. He has finished an Internship in Parenteral Compounding (VAMC in Gainesville) and has postdoctoral training in Antibiotic Stewardship, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Total Parenteral Nutrition, and SICU/Trauma pharmacotherapy (SMMC in West Palm Beach). Dr. Varela was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice from 1998-2000 (NSU College of Pharmacy), 2003-2004 (PBA School of Pharmacy), and Adjunct Professor in Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics in 2004 (FAU College of Nursing). He has provided advanced pharmacy practice experiences in clinical pharmacokinetics, internal medicine, and Surgical Intensive Care Unit/Trauma at St. Mary Medical Center. He has also instructed in Patient Care Management Lab and in Physical Assessment Lab. Currently Dr. Varela is a Facilitator for P1 year pharmacy students at the Palm Beach Campus; Instructor of Pharmaceutics Compounding Laboratory and Pharmacy Calculations; and Course Coordinator of Medical Terminology; he also coordinates and lectures in a course that provides students with information about complementary therapies. Other interests include computational chemistry/pharmacology, advancing Preceptor training and how to best develop clinical skills of pharmacy students. Dr. Varela has served in various professional and academic committees and has mentored Palm Beach students in the following organizations: APhA-ASP and AHSP.
