|Ms. Millie Vélez, Director of Alumni Development & Professional Affairs, has been with NSU College of Pharmacy since 2007. In this position, Ms. Vélez oversees the implementation of College of Pharmacy (COP) alumni development and professional affairs activities. Ms. Vélez also performs as a liaison with NSU and COP’s executive leadership in the development and execution of professional relations targeted to alumni, faculty, preceptors, students, and community-based constituents. Ms. Vélez serves on several College committees such as the Executive Committee, the Alumni Task Force, and the COP Sharks Rx Magazine Editorial Board, to help further promote the successes of the COP, engage alumni, and enhance student recruitment. Ms. Vélez moved to Broward County in 2000 and has since then played a key role in community involvement and engagement bringing her broad experience in multi-agency community-based networking in the fields of health and education to NSU College of Pharmacy and has successfully implemented a number of special events and programs for the College, including the International Cultural Showcase, the College’s 25th Anniversary Celebration, and the Dean’s Ambassador Program. Ms. Vélez has also been successful in extensive outreach to COP alumni and constituents. She has developed a rapport with a large sector of the COP alumni during the many alumni events she has taken a lead on for the College such as professional conference reunions, alumni visits and tours to the various College campuses, special alumni-student activities, and personal outreach to alumni places of business.
Ms. Vélez has been the recipient of several awards, including the Lisa Phillips Human Resources Leadership Award from Broward Health, Hispanic Woman of Distinction from the March of Dimes, the Leadership Hollywood Award from the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and also received a proclamation from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners making October 13th “Millie Vélez Appreciation Day” in Broward County.
When asked what makes NSU special, Ms. Vélez is quick bring up that her relationship with “NSU” goes back to the early ‘80s as a grants writer for Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine (SECOM) in Miami Beach. “It is very rewarding to come full circle in a place that I could only have dreamt about back then – it’s also very exciting to be a part of the University’s continuous growth. It is a privilege and honor to be a member of the NSU family.”
